Vannesa Sim made her first documentary at age 12 which focused on the emphatic treatment of the working class minority amongst the aging population. From then, her films take a critical view of social and cultural issues and she associates herself and work with nostalgia and isolation. Often times, the themes of her work feature personalities of deep reflection triggered by mundane objects, juxtaposed with the urge for resolve. Recently discovering some family recipes her late mother left behind invigorated a renewed sense of continuity and curiosity for her family’s past. Thus, she embarks on this investigative journey to impart as her graduating piece titled, Family Recipe.
Her resolve as a filmmaker is not to instigate what is right or wrong but to leave an impression to her viewers. Like her late mother used to say, “Whatever impression you leave behind, your self is in it”.
