Beyond the Brick and Mortar: A Historical Analysis of Performing Arts Venues in Singapore

Thesis Abstract

This dissertation traces and explores the historical trajectory of the development of performing arts venues in Singapore, going beyond the brick and mortar of the venues that have stood ground for the past 50 years, to examine the state of the arts as well as the cultural policies that influenced the changes and building of the venues. Beyond that, the dissertation examines the various purposes and relevance that these spaces served from the past till today. As well as serving practical purposes, the venues also have historical and cultural symbolic significance.
