Aashika Cunha, born in Mumbai , India and completed her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore in 2012. Previously she completed 3 years in Rachana Sansad college in Bombay where she was awarded with a partial diploma.
She has participated in 'Graduate Showcase' at Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore in 2011 and 2012; 'Art for Concern' at the O hotel, Pune, India in 2010; 'Annual Show' at Rachana Sansad College, Mumbai in 2008-10 amongst others.
Cunha usually expresses her notions through paintings, yet recently she has started exploring other mediums such as sculpture, installation, video and materials like clay, ceramics, X-rays to push her concepts further.
She feels the need to explore sexuality in India, where interestingly, eroticism is boldly depicted in ancient Indian explicit art and architecture. But, in modern day, sex is taboo. Hence, she is exploring the idea of concealing the obscenity of such works in the contemporary Indian art world.
She also creates a commentary on our body as a product, not only by the buying, selling and smuggling of organs, but also in the field of art where artists are treating the body as an object as their artwork. To bring this out , she creates an installation of sculptures of organs.
Underlying all these subjects however,is a concern and fondness about biology, the framing of its narrative and how we interpret them. Through this biology, Cunha connects her subjects and entwines them to create a commentary on these subjects.
